  37. The services that the ARRL provides via the internet include the
  38. Email Information Server and the Technical Information Service.
  39. The Information Server is an automated mail server that gives you
  40. access to many of information files relating to various facets of
  41. Amateur Radio.  You can retrieve any or all of these files by
  42. sending an email message to info@arrl.org here at ARRL HQ.
  43. Each file you request is then mailed to you automatically.
  44.  
  45. To use it, mail messages to:

  47.    info@arrl.org
  48.  
  49. Each line of the message body should contain a command as shown below.
  50. The subject of your message is not processed and may be omitted.  You
  51. may place as many commands in a message as you want.  The files you
  52. request will be sent to you in separate messages.  Only ASCII text
  53. files are supported.

  55. Valid INFO commands:
  56.  
  57. reply <address>  (may be needed - see below for explanation)
  58. help
  59. index
  60. send FILENAME   (example: send prospect.txt)
  61. quit

  63. In the above message example, "help" retrieves a brief set of
  64. instructions for info, "index" retrieves a list of available files
  65. and "prospect.txt" retrieves a text file containing information on
  66. becoming a radio amateur.

  68. Note to users with FTP capability:  All of these files are also
  69. available by anonymous ftp to ftp.std.com in the
  70. /pub/hamradio/ARRL/Server-files/info area.

  72. If you want to retrieve several text files with one message, use a
  73. separate line for each "send filename" request.

  75. Your From: field or Reply-to: field in your header should contain a
  76. valid Internet address, including full domain name.  If your From:
  77. field does not contain a valid Internet address, the answer will not
  78. reach you.  If this is the case, then use the reply command as shown
  79. above.  When needed, this command should always be the first command
  80. in your message.

  82. IMPORTANT: Please use the quit command in your message.  This will
  83.            prevent processing errors from message signatures.

  169. A message on the DX reflector replied to other's asking the same 
  170. question.  It noted that the subscription process is manual (not 
  171. machine/automatic as in other lists) and the administrator has been 
  172. seriously backlogged.  Bottom line was "be patient".

  192. The priority level of ham license issance versus the other types is
  193. driven by the shear number of people the FCC does not serve. i.e.
  194. there would be an awful lot of voters upset if it took 9 weeks to
  195. get a drivers lince for example. Further more, gun owners, vehicle
  196. operators form a larger economic community than hams (money talks
  197. bs walks as one employee at D.C. ham store once told me.)

  319. Right.  However, you can pick up a surplus Motorola at a hamfest for fifty
  320. bucks.  You get Motorola quality with the minor inconvenience of dealing
  321. with ten year old (or fifteen or twenty year old) state of the art.  I don't
  322. mind that.

  324. Hams are at the bottom of the radio food chain.  For many years, I converted
  325. surplus commercial and military equipment to use on the ham bands.  This is
  326. why I am so amused by the people who are attempting to modify ham equipment
  327. to use (illicitly) on the commercial bands.  Why bother?
